Fine Arts bookbinders are knowledgeable in what is typically called Book Arts. Some universities offer classes in Book Arts primarily through Art or Library Science departments. These binders are on the cutting edge of innovative, creative, and imaginative applications of bookbinding. The use of nontraditional materials or odd shapes or designs are the hallmark of the Fine Arts binder. Many of these binders are skilled in traditional binding practices but have branched out into a more expressive form of binding. Some of these binders only bind the work they themselves create and don't take on outside works but they may provide valuable insight into creating original works.
